5TH GRADE MARKING PERIOD 1
Measurement and Data: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Geometric measurement: Understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition.
Big Ideas:
Students will also recognize volume as additive and find the volume of solid figures composed of two right rectangular prisms
Geometric measurement: Understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition.
Big Ideas:
- A major emphasis in Grade 5 measurement, volume is taught to build a conceptual understanding that leads students to understanding the procedural understanding (formula) associated with calculating volume. This provides opportunities for students to “pack” and count to determine the volume or to build a right rectangular prism from cubes to see the layers as they build. These experiences allow students to extend their spatial structuring from two to three dimensions.
- Students connect what they know about area and finding the number of cubes in one layer to help them find the number of cubes in multiple layers. This supports their understanding of why
